The eleventh full-length album by the legendary Brazilian Death/Thrash/Groove Metal band.
The first Sepultura album recorded without any of the Cavalera brothers, as well as the first album featuring drummer Jean Dolabella, since the departure of Igor Cavalera in 2006.
This is the second concept album released by Sepultura, following 2006's "Dante XXI" which was based on Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy". "A-Lex" is based on the 1962 book "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess, which in 1971 was adapted into a film version by Stanley Kubrick.
Sepultura only have two members of the classic lineup left (one, if you're one of the real old school purists, but if we're being honest here those recordings weren't as good as what they did with Andreas who has, for all intents and purposes, been the creative core of the band for over a decade now). This isn't "Beneath The Remains" or "Arise". For sure this album is better than "Dante XXI" did (which itself was an improvement on "Roorback"). It hits harder and faster than anything since "Arise", that's for sure, especially on album bookends "Moloko Mesto" and "Paradox". Both of them are exactly what you would want from good Crossover Thrash/Hardcore with tasteful and forceful breakdowns. That's not a bad thing, especially when delivered like this by four blokes who have proven to be very good at it, like they've been at no other genre of Metal since they sadly gave up on bitchin' Deathrash around 1992. Album centrepiece "Sadistic Values" and, of course, "Ludwig Van" toward the end especially help to give the album the feel that the book managed so well.
Sepultura in 2009 are far from a spent force and it's good to see the most successful band of the Third World Posse still bringing strong and innovative Metal twenty-five years after they were formed!!
"A-Lex" sold 5000 copies in its first week of release in Brazil and 1600 in its first week of release in the United States. It was considered by the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone as one of the Top 25 Brazilian albums of 2012.
